Hi Saints Families,

God has blessed us with weather that allows for nature to flourish and reminds us the blessings that Spring brings. Remote learning continues and we have lots to celebrate in our learning. As always, we thank our staff for their commitment to keeping kids connected and engaged in learning. We also thank all of our students and families for your dedication too as we navigate these times together!

As always, please know that we are here for you if any needs arise. Do not hesitate to contact the school anytime.

Please see below for important reminders and updates for the week.

Gathered to Become Butterfly Visit!

It is a beautiful sight as you enter into our school to see the Gathered to Become Butterfly in our main foyer.  This butterfly represents transformation and is to celebrate and honour our Board wide Pastoral Theme.  It will now travel to another school – but will continue to remind us that we are all united as schools under the umbrella of the Waterloo Catholic School Board.

Please view the slide show of all of the activities that staff participated in for while the butterfly and chrysalis visited St. Clement School: Becoming Butterfly – St. Clement 2020-21 (1)

Final Transition Survey for the 2021-2022 School Year: Face-to-Face Learning or St. Isidore Virtual School

We wanted to provide you with a “heads up” so that you can begin thinking about your preferences for September 2021. In early June, a survey will be made available that will ask you to choose between attending St. Clement Catholic Elementary School face-to-face or attending St. Isidore Catholic Elementary School virtually.

Please know that the option that you choose now will be your decision for the entire school year.  There will be no transition period between delivery platforms.

It is our hope that all students will feel comfortable in attending St. Clement School face-to-face, but understand any hesitation you may be feeling.  It is our hope that with increased numbers of staff and students being vaccinated and the necessary and appropriate safety protocols in place, we can continue to provide a safe and consistent learning environment at St. Clement for all students.

We are in very challenging and uncertain times.  Have confidence that whatever your decision is, you will make the right one for your family and for your children.

Please stay tuned to Newswire, the St. Clement CES Website and the WCDSB Board website for updates and release dates of the survey.

As always, if you have questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact the main office at any time.

Jump Rope for Heart!

On June 2, St. Clements are participating in a virtual Jump Rope for Heart Event. This week we had our virtual Kick Off and students learned why we fundraise and practice healthy habits. Jump Rope for Heart is a great way for students to learn fun ways to get active while raising awareness and support for Heart & Stroke. The funds that kids collect supports research that helps other kids and families across the country. Jump is also giving back – 10% of net fundraising dollars goes back to our school.  Our school’s fundraising goal is $1000. This year, 100% of the fundraising will be done online. Your child’s teacher will be providing more information. Click the link to show your support and cheer us on!

It’s Planting Time in our Peace garden and an Outdoor Classrom!

St. Clements received some grant money from the Kitchener Grand River Rotary Club in support of planting in our peace garden and towards our new OUTDOOR CLASSROOM. The planting will occur in the summer and the fall months. This money along with some money from the WCDSB will be put towards the Outdoor Classroom in our current peace garden. We are beautifying the peace garden with perennials that will bloom during the Spring and Fall months when students are here to enjoy them. As well, we will be installing large rocks, in a theatre formation, for students to sit on while learning outdoors. There is a growing body of evidence that shows that learning outdoors is not just a fun, novel experience for kids, but it also helps them focus once they return to the classroom. Being outdoors also helps reduce stress and increases students interest in a subject and intrinsic motivation to learn and may help students to retain information longer than regular indoor classes. This will be a lovely extension of our school. We will keep you updated on our progress!

Umbrella Project: May Theme: Integrity

This month at the Umbrella Project we are excited to be focusing our energy on Integrity. Integrity is when we have a set of positive values and our actions in life match that set of positive values. If you look up integrity in the dictionary, it also means ‘wholeness’, when the things that we say and do match up with what we value.

Respond consistently to behaviour that lacks integrity

One of the first things I realized after becoming a parent was that it is impossible to control children’s behaviour with threats or anger but consistency goes a long way in creating the boundaries for healthy and respectful actions. Once you have established the values that matter to your child and your family, respond with consistency when reinforcing them.  Dishonest and disrespectful behaviour often fall into this category. Listen and respect your child as they explain their behaviour and provide information about why this isn’t acceptable behaviour in your family, with friends or in their communities. Consequences of this type of behaviour should be clear, predictable and reinforced.

When your children are young, the consequences are smaller for not using integrity and honesty but as they get older the stakes get higher. Most children will test the boundaries of dishonesty, irresponsibility and disrespect as a normal part of learning about the world and their role in it. When we teach integrity and consistently reinforce that there are consequences of not using this important skill from an early age, it helps our children make informed choices about how to identify positive values and live in a way that matches these values.

Learn how to be consistent with behaviour that lacks integrity.

Until next time,

Dr. Jen, The Umbrella Project
