Reminders for the Week

Enjoy your snow day, today, Saints…get out and play in the snow at some point today.

We were reminded on Monday the importance of love. My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. ~ John 15:12 It was a day to tell our family and friends how much we care and appreciate them. We are encouraged by these words from John to share kindness with everyone we meet and interact with, beyond one day of the year. We need to recognize and acknowledge the inherent goodness in each other on a daily basis. #WhereEachOneCounts means being inclusive at St. Clement and we try to make every day like Valentine’s day by teaching and learning about how to always offer kindness and respect to each other and ourselves too. We show our appreciation for our school community by using kind words, keeping our school clean, making safe choices at recess and a commitment to come to school each day ready to learn and contribute. Sharing our hearts in our community is evident through our many students who are recognized for their Umbrella Skills, our backpack drive to support those in our greater community ~ just to name a few! May our hearts continue to grow in love and may every day be Valentine’s Day.

Please see the information updates below:

School Screener:

Daily Screening and confirmation by the school remains a provincial requirement.  In our elementary schools we will stop using the paper confirmation form, however students will still be asked to confirm that they have completed the screening with you at home.  It is extremely important that no student comes to school not having completed their screening at home.  Please continue to use the following link and complete the screening each day before coming to school. We thank you for your on-going support as we continue to navigate these challenging times.

Monday, February 21st is FAMILY DAY!

Do you sometimes feel like there is no time left to just enjoy and be with the family in our busy days? Since 2008 Family Day has been celebrated in Ontario on the 3rd Monday of the month. There is NO school this day! This is a day to step away from other duties and distractions for a moment and just be together. Embrace the time and find joy in the small but beautiful moments with your family.

Prior to Christmas break and early January, some families requested a Chromebook and/or a Wi-Fi hotspot device to support their child(ren) during our province wide remote learning. At this time, we are kindly requesting that these Chromebook devices, charging cords and wi-fi hotspots please be returned to our school so that we will be prepared to allow our Grade 4 – 8 students to participate in the MDI survey that will take place in the near future, and support classroom instruction.  Please have it returned to the school no later than Tuesday, February 22. Sincere thanks to the families that have already returned their devices, charging cords and/or hotspot devices (if needed during remote learning). Much thanks for your continued support.

Grade 7 and 8 Literacy and Numeracy Support

Grade 7 and 8 students may receive non-credit literacy and numeracy instructional support to develop problem solving, mathematics and literacy skills, study and organizational skills, confidence and friendship building to succeed in Grades 7 and 8 and ease their transition to Secondary School. Taught by WCDSB teachers with Intermediate qualifications. Offered Saturdays, 9 AM – 12 PM (Online until permitted to be in-person). 13 sessions remaining until June 11th (no holiday weekends or March Break).

Temporary Remote Learning:

The option for students to connect to their classes Temporary Remote Learning is coming to an end on Friday, February 18th, 2022.  The option was provided at the request of the board and Ministry of Education while we navigated the high point of the Omicron surge.  We are now a month out from the peak and while the risk of covid is not fully removed, it is far similar to where we were in the fall months.  We look forward to seeing all of our friends back in-person on Tuesday, February 22, 2022.

Umbrella Project: Did you know… students are encouraged daily to show their Saints Umbrella Skills. Staff recognize students showing their skills for the month. Students from each class will be recognized and celebrating for their skills and receive a BRAG TAG for their backpack.

Umbrella Project: Theme for the Month of February : Self-efficacy

Help your child find opportunities to meet peers with similar interests

It should come as no surprise to hear that your children are highly influenced by the crowd they spend their time with. This can be especially true when it comes to their self-efficacy, motivation and success. Research shows that students who enter the school year with a highly motivated group of peers tend to show increases in their self-efficacy, while groups with a low level of motivation tend to have a negative impact on a child’s self-efficacy. Modelling is at work here and is especially powerful, the more similar the peers are to your child.

While we can’t dictate who our children choose as friends, it’s important to recognize the impact of their peers and ensure that our children have the opportunity to meet people with highly similar interests and behaviours. The group dynamics in a motivated and engaged crowd like this will increase the likelihood that your child will experience a boost in self-efficacy and improved confidence in their own abilities over time. Joining clubs or teams at school can be a good place to start.

If you’re not sure what your child is interested in yet, start by providing opportunities to try a range of different things. They will be sure to meet lots of interesting people along the way.

Health & Happiness,

Dr. Jen, The Umbrella Project
