Have a wonderful, summer, Saints!

Happy Last Day of School, Saints! Wishing you a safe, healthy, and happy summer soaking up the sunshine and God’s gift to us, nature!

Good-Bye Saints

Hello Saints,

I am writing with bitter sweet news today as I am sharing that I will not be returning to St. Clement CES as principal next year but am also very excited for a new adventure and a new school.  I have loved every moment of my four years working alongside each of you.  Our community is truly exceptional.  You have become like family, and I have truly enjoyed watching your child learn and grow.  I want to thank you, sincerely, for your care, compassion, and commitment to Catholic education.  You have been wonderful partners in education, and I will miss you all so very much.

I can share your new principal’s name – she comes with a commitment to quality education and faith based focus.  I know that Mrs. Sherry MacDonald  will continue to build upon the community we have built and will ensure your child is successful and happy here.

No Hot Lunches this Week

Just a reminder to all parents that there is no hot lunch this week. Please make sure that your child has a packed lunch every day!

What a day to celebrate

What an exciting day today and you can see from the pictures below.

Early Years and Primary classes enjoyed Playday; Our Spirit Day for today was ConGraduation – our Grade 8’s future is so bright as they head to highschool that we gotta wear shades to honour their graduation! Tonight we look forward to seeing them celebrate at the church.

Wednesday, June 29th is the last day of school for the year! We will be doing lots of clean up and there will be lots coming home … bring an extra bag with you. Dismissal will be at 3:20 p.m. Please notify the school if you are keeping your child(ren) home from school during the last few days of the school year. We wish all of our students an amazing summer with fun and relaxation.

In keeping with the reporting procedures for the Waterloo Catholic District School Board, you will be receiving the Term 2 Report Card for your child in Grades 1 to 8, and the Kindergarten Communication of Learning for your child in kindergarten, today,  Monday, June 27th.
Report cards provide an opportunity to celebrate your child’s growth in learning and focus on the next steps. Please speak to your child’s educator if you have questions about the report or how you can support your child’s learning.   We would appreciate your assistance with signing and returning the last page of the report card with your child on Tuesday morning, as this acknowledgment is filed with the copy of your child’s report card in their Ontario Student Record.

Reminders for the Week for June 27 – June 29

“Joy does not simply happen to us. We have to choose joy and keep choosing it every day.” – Henri Nouwen

Welcome to our last week of school (partial week). As the school year draws to a close, I want to express my sincere thanks to the following: staff who have worked tirelessly throughout the year to meet the needs of the students in their care, parents who have supported all of our activities throughout the year, school council for their exceptional efforts this school year and lastly the students who strive each day to display our Catholic virtues. I think we are blessed to have such a wonderful group of young people at St. Clement Catholic School who try to do their best academically and to learn about and live the Gospel Values daily. Lastly, to our Grade 8 graduating class: we wish you the best of luck in your future endeavors. We sincerely hope that your experiences at St. Clement School have been memorable, spiritually enriching and personally rewarding.

The Pope’s prayer intention for June: We pray for Christian families around the world; may they embody and experience unconditional love and advance in holiness in their daily lives.

Umbrella Project: Did you know… students are encouraged daily to show their Saints Umbrella Skills. Staff recognize students showing their skills for the month. Students from each class will be recognized and celebrating for their skills and receive a BRAG TAG for their backpack.

Umbrella Project: Theme for the Month of June: Healthy Lifestyle

This month at the Umbrella Project, we will build our Lifestyle skills.

Lifestyle skills include the healthy habits your child needs to have the strength to hold up that big umbrella they are building. Food, sleep, outdoor time and other brain foods are extremely important in helping your child use their valuable coping skills.

When we’re hungry, tired, or haven’t had enough exercise, our brains don’t work as well, making it more difficult to practice all the other skills of wellbeing. We can become grouchy, short-tempered, and less capable of coping with the day-to-day challenges of life. Even people with the strongest coping skills can’t use them as well when they aren’t feeding their brains properly. Making the choice to establish healthy lifestyle behaviours (such as eating well, sleeping enough, and exercising regularly) has been shown to reduce stress, elevate mood, improve immune system function, and make learning easier.

Recharge with quality brain food

Summer is a wonderful time to feed our brain. The school year can be busy and rushed – so take advantage of the summer months as time to help your child recharge their brain. I like to think about brain food not just as what we actually eat, but everything our brain consumes.  What we take in with our other senses also feeds our brain: what we see, hear, touch and smell are all fuel for creating the right neural pathways in our brain.

Over the summer, make sure your child’s brain is getting a balanced diet of quality brain foods mixed in with some of the lower-quality inputs like too much time spent on screens.

Here are some of my favorite brain foods: great music, new and engaging experiences, time with friends, walks in the forest, snuggling, unstructured outdoor play, laughter, giving to others and so many more.

Here at the Umbrella Project, we will be taking some time to fuel ourselves and to build new programs for teachers and families. We anticipate that brain food such as active outdoor meetings and deep conversations over evening bonfires will become a natural part of our daily schedule.

If you have any stories or experiences about your summer adventures with your kids, we would love to hear them! Send us an email at admin@umbrellaproject.co or connect with us on our Facebook page (www.facebook.com/umbrellapjct).

We are looking forward to reconnecting with you in September for another great year building wellbeing.

See this blog for a more detailed look at coaching children through the challenges of building a healthy lifestyle.

Until next time,

Dr. Jen, The Umbrella Project
